Primary liver cancer is cancer that began in the liver. It can occur as a single tumor or many small cancer nodules throughout the liver. Primary liver cancer will commonly spread to the lungs, the portal vein (kidney), and portal lymph nodes. Hepatocellular carcinoma is a primary liver cancer. It is associated with chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and fatty liver disease amongst others, and most patients, although not all, will have cirrhosis of the liver. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a rare disorder in the United States, but the most common primary tumor of the liver.
